Scroll down to take a deep dive into the revolutionizing research on river science in the Rocky Mountains.
We are telling the stories of Berkeley Lab's research and initiatives using StoryMaps: a web-based platform for sharing multimedia narratives with photos, videos, writing, and illustrations.
Each project will include the finished StoryMap, a recorded walkthrough and Q&A with scientists involved, and materials for learning more about the subject. New installations will come out every few months.
November 2022:
Data Streams: How wireless technology is transforming river science in the Rockies
More than 1 in every 10 Americans rely on water from the Colorado river, and 80% of that water comes from the Rocky Mountains. Researchers from Berkeley Lab's Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) have been working for years to understand these mountain watersheds, and now their work is being revolutionized with the help of the Energy Science Network (ESnet).
In this StoryMap we explore the beautiful East River watershed in the Colorado Rockies, where EESA and ESnet are collaborating on the next generation of wirelessly networked sensors to predict and manage the water needs of 40 million people.

The Liquid Sunlight Alliance and the quest for Solar Fuels
How can you capture solar energy in liquid form? Come discover the science behind the carbon-neutral fuels of the future. In this StoryMap, we take a tour of the societal need for liquid fuels and how Scientists at Berkeley Lab’s Liquid Sunlight Alliance (LiSA) are working to create them using just sunlight and carbon dioxide.
